The Watcher and the Volunteer
Two songs about surveillance and digital life — one from 1982, one from the social media era. Both were right.
We built a world where privacy is a premium feature and loneliness is a bug. Two things happened simultaneously: someone started watching everything, and we decided we didn’t mind.
Judas Priest saw the first part in 1982. Electric Eye isn’t about paranoia — it’s about a system that believes it’s righteous. “I am perpetual, I keep the country clean.” The watcher thinks it’s helping. That’s what makes it chilling. In 2026, that eye isn’t a satellite in orbit — it’s a tracking pixel in every page load, a telemetry report every time your cursor idles.
Amaranthe saw the second part decades later. Digital World doesn’t warn. It celebrates. “Living in a digital world / I’m not alone / I can be anyone.” The cage is comfortable. Nobody forced us in. We walked in and decorated the walls.
One is being watched. The other is volunteering to stay.
Both were right. They’re singing about different floors of the same building — and neither song sounds like a prediction. They sound like a Tuesday.
